India’s Quantum Computing Mission Approved with ₹6003 Cr Budget

India joins the list of countries doing R&D on quantum computing

Quantum computing capability is vital to advance in future technology. Major countries have already established R&D facilities to make rapid progress in Quantum technology. Quantum start-ups are gaining numbers in countries like the US, China, Japan, Canada, etc. Not only India but other developed countries also run National Quantum Computing Mission.

Similarly, the Government of India has also approved a budget of ₹6003 crores for the National Quantum Mission, which would continue from 2023-2024 to 2030-31. According to Anurag Thakur, Union Minister, this decision would push India’s technological advancements to unprecedented heights.

Quantum Computing Mission India

Specifically, India aims to develop up to 50 qubits computing in the next three years, up to 50-100 qubits in five years, and up to 1000 qubits within eight years of the quantum computing mission.

India’s Quantum Computing Mission Importance

There will be wide-scale use of Quantum computing such as space technology, communication, health care, data security, defence, scientific & industrial development, etc. Basically, Quantum computing can smoothly solve very complex problems, which our current binary computers cannot.

However, as of now, the developments in quantum computing are in the initial stages. Top countries are still exploring more possible use cases of quantum computing. Likewise, our country, India, joined this quantum computing R&D group.

To become self-reliant in future technology, self-developed quantum computing is necessary. So, the quantum computing mission will eliminate the dependency on other countries for quantum technology.

Not too late

Jitendra Singh, Science and Technology Minister, said- India will be the seventh country to have a dedicated quantum mission after the US, Austria, Finland, France, Canada and China. He added – All these countries are also at the R&D stage. None of them has started any applications of it (quantum technology). We are also going to be at par.

Undoubtedly, a country with quantum computing technology will have the edge over other countries in all future technologies. Hence, many big companies are heavily investing billions of dollars in this, including IBM, google, etc.
