Kochi-Lakshadweep Submarine Optical Fiber Connection

The high-speed optical fiber from Kochi to Lakshadweep islands will give significant connectivity capabilities across the island through its 200 Gbps speed. Here, the Japanese NEC Corporation laid the undersea fiber cable, and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) acted as a project executing agency.

Lakshadweep Islands FTTH cables

Total fiber cable distance – 1868 Kilometer

The total cost of the project – ₹1072 croes (taxes extra)

This high-speed fiber cable will give several benefits to the people of Lakshadweep.

  • High-speed broadband service over FTTH, 5G/4G networks, and other medium
  • It will boost E-Governance, Tourism, Education, Health, Commerce, and Industries. It will also accelerate overall social and economic development on the island.
  • Telecom services will get stronger under high-speed lines.
  • The project will play a significant role in achieving “Digital India” and other government missions. There are many benefits of high-speed internet connectivity from various perspectives.

Earlier, the only means of communication with the Islands was through Satellite medium, which had limited bandwidth capacity. Due to limitations, it could not meet the increasing bandwidth demand. And we all know that satellite internet is a weak connectivity mode, and yes, Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet is an exception here.

New Taj Branded Resorts by IHCL (Tata Group)

During PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, he indirectly promoted Lakshadweep Islands tourism on social media. PM Modi has such a large following that the searches for Lakshadweep tourist places started skyrocketing on every possible platform working in India.

Amid this scenario, Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), part of India’s Tata Group, announced two Taj-branded resorts on Lakshadweep Island. IHCL selected Suheli and Kadmat Island and planned a 110-room resort for both locations. Suheli’s 110 rooms include 60 beachfront villas and 50 water villas, while the Kadmat Island 110 rooms feature 35 water villas and 75 beach villas.

Desalination Plant -for Drinking Water Supply

Generally, lack of drinking water is a common problem of land surrounded by sea, and Lakshadweep Islands are one of them. To ensure that the water scarcity does not affect the people of Lakshadweep, the Prime Minister of India has inaugurated one Low-Temperature Thermal Desalination Plant at Kadmat.

Moreover, Israel wants to increase its engagement with the Indian Government on the desalination project. Israel’s embassy in India said – “We were in Lakshadweep last year upon the federal government’s request to initiate the desalination program. Israel is ready to commence working on this project tomorrow.”

No doubt, Israel has the proper expertise and technologies to convert seawater into drinking water. Decades ago, Israel began the desalination of seawater to make it drinkable through a reverse osmosis process. Furthermore, due to the good relations between the two countries, Israel also promoted the tourist destinations of Lakshadweep Islands in its tweets on X.com.

In addition to the desalination program, there is a dedicated Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) project for all Agatti and Minicoy Island households. The Indian government is working very well on drinking water projects to avoid any drinking water-related problems.

Solar Project in Kavaratti

The solar power plant at Kavaratti is the first-ever battery-backed solar power project in Lakshadweep. It will reduce the dependency on diesel-powered generators in Kavaratti Island. Also, the use of sustainable energy is a good alternative in the region to make the environment cleaner and reduce extra expenses on diesel.

Lakshadweep Islands Tourism will Increase.

Lakshadweep has beautiful beaches, coral reefs, various islands, aquatic diversity, etc. In short, this place has incredible natural beauty all over the islands. For a long time, Lakshadweep has not become the first priority for tourists. There could be many reasons for this mentality, but now the Government of India has taken control and started developing the entire island, which will eventually lead to the growth of the Lakshadweep tourism industry.

Apart from tourism, the Government of India is investing in Lakshadweep for the betterment of the people living across the island.
